Each semester, I have the privilege of presenting to sophomore student-athletes at my alma mater, the University of Louisville. Returning to campus to share knowledge with the next generation is something I’m extremely passionate about.
These sessions focus on Finance 101, giving students a strong foundation in budgeting, saving, and investing, while also exploring how they can leverage their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) earnings to set themselves up for long-term success.
For many young athletes, NIL deals represent their first significant income stream. While it’s exciting, it also comes with responsibility. My goal is to help them understand:
- Budgeting for today: How to manage everyday expenses and avoid common financial pitfalls.
- Planning for tomorrow: Why saving early and consistently matters, and how compounding works in their favor.
- Investing in their future: Simple strategies to turn NIL earnings into lasting wealth.
- Protecting their brand: How smart financial decisions can enhance their personal and professional reputation.
These conversations aren’t just about money—they’re about empowerment. By making informed choices now, student-athletes can position themselves ahead of the game, both on and off the field.
